Pain Free- Stopping Chronic Pain

facebooktwitterlinkedinby featherpainfree 1 The subject of pain is the number one conversation at my local Y, where I go for my morning swim. Here’s the typical conversation-

Jaimie- Hey John, how are you doing?

John- I had surgery years ago, and can no longer swim because of severe shoulder pain. Physical therapy didn’t work, and it’s a bummer.

Jaimie- Check out this book called Pain Free. It worked for me.

It shouldn’t be surprising that so many people experience pain. It’s estimated that 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any give time.1.  I was one of them. In 2008, I began going to the Egoscue Westchester clinic in NY, under the direction of Greg Heinemann and it has worked wonders for my sciatica. My primary reason why I settled on Egosuce therapy?  I got tired of running to the Chiropractor,  and for Acupuncture treatments, all the time. Egoscue therapy can be done at home, whenever I need it. I like doing the stretches, and it feels great when I complete it. That’s a blessing for me.

I had a conversation with Greg today and asked him some  questions for this post.

Jaimie-Why did you become an Egoscue Therapist?

Greg- As a result of a sports injury when I was in 15, I broke a piece of my femur. The injury occurred as a result of tight muscles, specifically my hip flexor muscle. This sparked my interest in the body, its healing and returning it to normal.  In college, I studied Exercise Science with a concentration in Athletic Training.  While my leg or hip never bothered me in college, my body developed a compensation and started to change my body because my right hip was still very tight.  I actually ended up developing neck pain and arm referral because of how my tight hip had changed my body position.

Jaimie- So Egoscue therapy eventually cleared that up.

Greg- Yes, it took me about 8 weeks and it went back to normal. I had it really bad. If I was driving a long trip in the car I would get neck pain, and my hand would fall asleep. Then one day I noticed, that the pain was all gone. It was incredible.

Jaimie- My experience was very similar. I always suffered from Sciaticva, due to back injury I received when I was 18, when a car crashed into me while I was at a red light. I went for years to Chiropractors and for Acupuncture treatment. In my experience Egoscue treatment worked the best. And again, the best part was that I could do it at home.

Greg- Being able to do it at home is  s a common benefit people express.

Jaimie- Is the experience consistent between different Egoscue Therapists?

Greg- We have been using technology since 2003, which helps Egoscue therapists think like Pete Egoscue, the creator of the system. The goal is to offer a uniform level of care, where ever you receive the treatment.

Jaimie – What’s your elevator pitch?

Greg- I save lives.

Jaimie- What do you mean?

Greg- When people ask me if I’m a doctor, I say no. Are you a fire fighter?  I say  no. I then say I help people get out of pain, by helping them get out of their own physical way. I help people with their posture.

Jaimie- Posture?

Greg- A lot of pain is a result of a posture issue. Your body is out of alignment. It’s out of balance. In most cases it’s not a debilitating disease you are going through, the pain is a way your body is telling you something is wrong, and this is a way to help adjust it.

Jaimie- Sounds like an easy message.

Greg- The hard part is the follow-through. While the exercise doesn’t take a long time, changing your habits is hard for a lot of people.

Jaimie- There are some people who would rather take a pill.

Jaimie- Static Back is my favorite exercise. It works 90% of the time for me. When it doesn’t work, I go to your clinic for a “tune-up.”. What is your experience?

Greg- Most people feel static back is their favorite exercise. It’s usually the first exercise we show and it feels people love it.
